D-Day

Today is DECISION day! To retire at the end of this school year or not. I have my application for Maine State Retirement all made out, and my letter of intent to retire typed, but as usual I am flip-flopping on my decision! I still want to stay involved in the school (we will be moving into a brand new school building in September!) as a volunteer and substitute teacher - but would really like to have more time for....well- you know if you read my blog ...knitting and reading! Plus a few other things like a little traveling. I am so bad at making decisions - and of course my DH says do what I want to do. So, help me my blogging friends, what should I do??????????????

And for some knitting content - I finished another project to add to my 52 in 52 list - it's the Mystery KAL from Another Knit Dishcloth Group - "I Heart Knitting 2009"
I haven't blocked it yet - but - what a great pattern! Thanks Kathy!

Oh my. I can't wait till I can retire. If you can afford it, go for it--especially if you plan to stay involved. I work part time on an as needed basis now and will retire in a little less than 2 1/2 years and plan, if able, to continue to work as I am now. Retire and enjoy it!! Much less stress!!

Maybe if you list the pros and cons it will help you decide. I can retire in 12, but I am not sure if I will want to. I guess it is something we look forward to for years and years, and then when it finally comes, it is a giant step to take and is a little scary. Good luck with your decision.

that would be a tough decision. My mom in NH just put her paperwork in in dec to retire this year from the post office. they offered early retirements and this would just be a year early for her but she is keeping her fingers crossed!

C'mon. You really don't want us to decide for you. Take a deep breath and look into your heart. You KNOW the answer.

Pros and cons shmoes and shmons. I've got at least another 15 years and while I love and am accomplished at my music teacher job, if I could retire tomorrow, I wouldn't think twice- happy to volunteer and sub on my own terms.

I retired last September (DH had been retired for 2 years at that point) and have absolutely no regrets! As long as you can keep your fingers in where you want to, I'd go for it. Now, I was a year-round public librarian, not a teacher with "longer vacations." We took a cruise last fall and have another scheduled late in February. Our only grandbaby lives a 4 hour drive away and we go often, so you can tell we're (DH and me, of course!) having a ball!

Can you retire and still take some jobs at the school when they need you and when you want to? In Norway that is an optin. You know that I had to retire after the stroke, and I know that if I could I would love to work just a little bit. I miss the kids and my collegas. But then again, every person is sooooo diferent. My husband had to retire now because of Parkinson, and he doesn't miss anyone! And if you DO retire, you can come and visit me! Oh, gosh, just the thought makes me smile!!!! So I guess I haven't helped a bit, have I? HiHi Love Vig

Wow what a decision to make. I know that two of the teachers that worked with my husband retired last year. They both work as subs and love it. We saw one of them over the holidays and she said that it is really great. She doesn't do lesson plans, grade papers and only works when she wants to. The other teachers that were there laughed and said that often when she isn't needed to sub, she is at the school volunteering. She said that the upside to that is that when she volunteers, she comes in at 8:15 (after the kids have all hit the classrooms), takes a lunch and usually is gone by 2:00.

The other one also works as a sub and is helping by writing grants and such.

Oh, and what they both commented on was that neither had to do "bus duty" a real blessing on days like today when it is 10 degrees outside.

I had a co-worker that retired a couple of years ago. She says over and over again that she never had it so good . . . and wished she had retired sooner.

I would make a list of the pros and cons of both the retiring and not retiring at this time.

I might have missed this but is your husband retired?
